Start of "Membrane Lightweight Structures" Master Program Nov 2010

Above all, this Program will provide practical yet innovative answers to real-world questions.

This comprehensive Master Program includes lectures by key figures from the Membrane Lightweight Structure Industry and Academia. The so called "top secrets" will be fully revealed and the worldwide accredited and approved academic M.Eng. eq. M.Sc. (90 ECTS) opens also the door to an unprecedented Ph.D program.

State of the art software like the EASY and Formfinder Professional are free available to all participants in their development as the most prepared and up-to-date graduate in the field of membrane lightweight structures.
This 4 semester part-time program is presented in Vienna Austria, in 4 units each lasting 12 days. The first Unit will start Nov. 8^th2010.

Robert Wehdorn-Roithmayr and Phillip Jurewicz:
A unique classification characterising the “context and life-cycle management”.

´Form-active structure systems are structure systems of flexible, non-rigid matter, in which the redirection of forces is effected through particular FORM DESIGN and characteristic FORM STABILISATION.´. FORMFINDER offers the designer an intuitional step by step design path of three design stages. After a preliminary design stage using a physical model and the FORMFINDER software simulation, the designer is presented with an evaluation of the design. By means of automated object recognition, each design is described geometrically and recognised in context. The description allows the design to be matched with for example reference projects or construction solutions.

The now introduced third design stage is also extended with a unique classification characterising the “context and life-cycle management”.

As “Form follows Finance” form-active structures can offer additional value with respect to their economic aspect The idea is to visualise added economic values in the context of life-cycle management. The economic idea of life-cycle management does not start with a sketch or end with a “physical event”. Life-cycle management has to start and end by collecting the values of “what effects the Form” in terms of “building events”. Building events represent an additional view to consistent database fields. Building events can be represented with a taxonomy of “event types”. Event types should model for example the economic execution of construction work, material decisions and the details and operation of a building depend closely on design decisions.

The following examples are intended to give an idea of the dependency of “Form follows…”

Event energy consumption: Fabrication for example the level of prefabrication affects energy consumption and quality. Transport for example the general public has an interest in a reduction of site traffic. Energy to erect, energy to operate or energy to dismantle.

Event change on-site: On-site reorganisation for example erection of a new building incorporating the existing, conversion, component change or renewal.

Off-site reorganisations for example change of building code, change of neighbourhood, change of adjoining structures, plants, streets.

Event change of application: Extension or conversion of a building from for example industrial use to a leisure facility.

Event change of ownership: Change of ownership can affect a building in different ways. Interest of the building owner could be part of the project description.

Event change of environment: Geographic changes for example earthquake, global warming, pollution, increased need for sun protection.

Alignment of approaches such as those mentioned could create additional value and higher quality in the discussion of form-active structures. These values will support decision makers when choosing form-active structures.As already announced in TensiNews a close cooperation between TensiNet and FORMFINDER is now to be extended to database linkage to create additional value.
